Tracking Gifts from Donor Advised Funds and Donor Directed Funds in DonorDock

Donor Advised Funds (DAFs) are a growing way for donors to give, offering tax advantages and flexibility. With DonorDock, DAF gifts can be tracked accurately, ensuring that both the donor and the DAF provider are properly recognized.

How DAF Gifts Are Tracked in DonorDock

When a gift is received through DAFpay on a giving page, DonorDock automatically handles the process for you:

  • A received gift is created on the organization record for the Donor Advised Fund provider.

  • A linked soft credit gift is created on the individual donor’s contact record to recognize the donor who directed the gift.

  • Automatic tagging ensures accurate reporting:

    • The DAF organization is given the badge Chariot DAF Provider.

    • The received gift is tagged with DAFpay Gift.

    • The soft credit gift is tagged with DAFpay Soft Credit and Linked Soft Credit.

This setup ensures you can both acknowledge the donor’s role and report clearly on which DAF providers sent funds.

Tracking DAF Gifts Manually

If a DAF gift comes in outside of DAFpay, you can still track it manually in DonorDock:

  1. Create a contact record for the DAF provider and set the contact type to Organization.

    • Consider adding a badge like DAF Organization to easily filter these organizations later.

  2. Create a gift on the DAF provider’s record for the received amount.

  3. Create a linked soft credit gift for the individual donor who directed the gift.

    • If the donor is not yet in your database, create a contact record for them first.

Otto Tips

  • Two sides of the coin: Always track both the DAF provider (hard credit) and the donor (soft credit).

  • 🦑 Manual or automatic: Whether gifts flow through DAFpay or arrive offline, DonorDock can track them consistently.
