Texting Overview

DonorDock texting tools help your organization communicate with contacts by text, send bulk outreach, manage one-to-one conversations, and make it easier for donors to access your Giving Pages through Text-to-Donate.

Text messages sent or received through DonorDock are recorded as activities, helping your team maintain a history of text communication alongside other contact activity.

Your organization needs a DonorDock Text Number before using texting features. This is a text-only SMS phone number assigned to your entire DonorDock organization account.

Any text message sent through DonorDock will come from this shared Text Number, regardless of which team member is selected as the sender on the activity. DonorDock records the selected team member for activity tracking, but the contact will always see your organization's DonorDock Text Number.

Once the number is assigned, you can immediately configure Text-to-Donate keywords on your Giving Pages.

To send bulk texts or use individual Text Conversations, your organization must also complete A2P 10DLC registration. This carrier registration identifies your organization and how you plan to use text messaging, helping mobile carriers recognize your messages as legitimate application-to-person communication.

Text Credits

Sending and receiving text messages uses Text Credits. Your subscription includes a monthly allotment of credits, and you can purchase additional credits as needed.

The number of credits used depends on the length and characters contained in each message.

Contact Mobile Numbers

DonorDock sends text messages to the Mobile Phone field on a contact record.

If the mobile number is invalid, a landline, or otherwise unable to receive messages, DonorDock may mark the contact as having a Bad Mobile Number after receiving a carrier error.

Communication Preferences

Contacts may opt out of text messages by replying STOP to your organization's DonorDock Text Number. SMS-unsubscribed contacts cannot receive text messages through DonorDock.

A contact can opt back in by texting START, or a team member can use the Resubscribe SMS action on the contact record.

Text-to-Donate

Text-to-Donate connects a keyword with a DonorDock Giving Page. For example, your organization might advertise: Text GIVE to 555-555-1234

When a donor sends the keyword, DonorDock automatically replies with your configured response and a link to the Giving Page.

Text-to-Donate works well for:

  • Events

  • Printed materials

  • Presentations

  • Social media

  • Email campaigns

  • Signs and displays

💡 Text-to-Donate does not automatically process a donation. When a contact texts your keyword, DonorDock sends an automatic reply with the Giving Page link. The donor must open the link and complete the donation through the Giving Page.

Bulk Texting

Bulk Texting allows your organization to send one message to a group of contacts. Recipients may be selected from standard DonorDock lists, Marketing Lists, or contacts returned by a report. You can personalize bulk texts with merge tags and send them immediately or schedule them for later.

Bulk Texting works well for:

  • Event reminders

  • Campaign announcements

  • Program updates

  • Giving reminders

  • Time-sensitive organization news

Text Conversations

Text Conversations provide an inbox for individual text communication between your organization and contacts.

Conversations display a running history that may include:

  • Individual messages

  • Replies from the contact

  • Bulk texts previously sent to the contact

  • Text-to-Donate responses

  • Automated subscription responses

Text Conversations work well when your team needs to communicate directly with a specific person rather than sending group outreach.

All three texting features contribute to the contact's text activity history in DonorDock.
