Donor Payment Methods and Digital Wallets

DonorDock Online Giving Forms offer multiple options for donors to make a Gift, depending on your connected payment processors and the donor’s device, browser, location, and chosen giving frequency. Organizations can use Stripe, PayPal, or both.

Stripe Payment Options

When Stripe is enabled, donors will be able to select from different payment methods during the payment portion of the Giving Page.

Available Stripe payment options can include:

  • Credit or debit card

  • ACH/Bank

  • Apple Pay

  • Google Pay

  • Cash App

Not every donor will see every payment method. Stripe determines which options are available based on factors such as the donor’s device, browser, location, selected giving frequency, and the payment methods enabled for your Stripe account.

Credit and Debit Cards

Credit and debit cards are the standard Stripe payment option and can be used for one-time Gifts as well as supported recurring Gifts.

Donors enter their card and billing information during the Stripe payment step. Once the transaction processes successfully, DonorDock creates the Gift and associates it with the appropriate Contact record.

ACH

ACH allows eligible donors to give directly from a bank account through Stripe. Availability can vary based on Stripe requirements and the donor’s location, so the ACH option may not appear for every donor.

ACH transactions can take longer to complete than card payments because the payment must move through the bank settlement process. During that time, the Gift may remain in a pending or processing status until Stripe confirms the transaction.

Apple Pay

Apple Pay may appear when the donor is using a supported Apple device, browser, and wallet configuration. If those requirements aren't met, Apple Pay won't appear as an available payment method.

For Giving Pages embedded on your organization’s website, the website domain may also need to be registered with Stripe before Apple Pay and other supported digital wallet options can be used through the embedded form.

Google Pay

Google Pay may appear when the donor is using a supported device and browser with an eligible payment method available through Google Pay.

If Google Pay is not available for the donor’s current device, browser, or configuration, the option will not appear on the payment screen.

Cash App

Cash App may also be available through Stripe for eligible donors. On a supported mobile device, selecting Cash App can open the Cash App application to complete the payment.

When a donor is giving from a computer, Stripe may instead display a QR code that can be scanned using the Cash App mobile application.

Enable or Disable Stripe Payment Methods

The Stripe payment methods available on your DonorDock Giving Pages are managed through your organization’s Stripe account. If your organization does not want to offer a particular Stripe payment method, it can be disabled directly in Stripe.

  1. Log in to your Stripe Dashboard at dashboard.stripe.com.

  2. Navigate to "Settings".

  3. Select "Payment Methods".

  4. Under "Configuration Management", locate the "Platform" dropdown.

  5. Select "DonorDock" to view the payment method configuration associated with DonorDock and your Stripe account.

  6. Review the payment methods currently enabled beneath that configuration.

  7. Turn off any payment method that you do not want to make available through your DonorDock Giving Pages.

Once a payment method is disabled in the DonorDock configuration in Stripe, it will no longer be offered to eligible donors on your Giving Pages. Payment methods that remain enabled are still subject to Stripe’s device, browser, location, and transaction eligibility requirements, so an enabled option may not appear for every donor.

Register a Website Domain for Digital Wallets

When a Giving Page is embedded on your organization’s own website, Stripe may require that website domain to be registered before supported digital wallets such as Apple Pay can be displayed within the embedded payment experience.

This is especially important when using an Iframe Embed Code, because the Giving Page is being displayed within a page hosted on your organization’s domain. Registering the domain with Stripe allows Stripe to recognize the website where the payment form is being displayed and make eligible wallet options available.

To add your website domain in Stripe:

  1. Log in to your Stripe Dashboard at dashboard.stripe.com.

  2. Open Stripe’s payment settings.

  3. Navigate to the settings for payment method domains.

  4. Add the domain where your DonorDock Giving Page is embedded.

  5. Complete any verification steps requested by Stripe.

The domain entered should be the domain of the website where the embedded Giving Page will appear. If your organization embeds Giving Pages on more than one website domain, each applicable domain may need to be registered separately.

Registering a domain does not guarantee that a particular wallet will appear for every donor. The donor must still meet the requirements for that payment method, including using a supported device, browser, location, and wallet configuration.

Stripe Recurring Payments

Stripe supports recurring Gifts through DonorDock Online Giving Forms. The Giving Page can be configured to offer Stripe frequencies including:

  • Weekly

  • Monthly

  • Quarterly

  • Semi-Annually

  • Annually

The Giving Page can also offer One-Time giving alongside any of these recurring options. When a donor selects a recurring frequency and completes payment through Stripe, Stripe creates the subscription and processes future payments on that schedule. DonorDock creates the resulting Gifts as those recurring payments are processed.

PayPal

PayPal can be offered whether or not Stripe is also connected. When PayPal is enabled, donors can select PayPal during checkout and complete the transaction using their PayPal account.

PayPal recurring giving works differently from Stripe recurring giving. PayPal supports monthly subscriptions only, and the recurring option appears automatically as a checkbox when donors select PayPal. The Giving Frequency settings configured on the Giving Page apply only to Stripe and do not control the PayPal subscription option.

Successful PayPal transactions are sent back to DonorDock through PayPal’s Instant Payment Notification, or IPN, system. IPN must be enabled in the organization’s PayPal account for those Gifts to be created automatically in DonorDock.

DAFpay

Online Giving Forms can also include DAFpay, powered by Chariot, which allows eligible donors to initiate a Gift directly from a Donor-Advised Fund.

DAFpay is available only for one-time Gifts. If a donor selects a recurring frequency such as Monthly, Quarterly, or Annually, the DAFpay button will automatically be hidden because that Gift is no longer eligible for DAFpay.

DAFpay uses a different payment and Gift-recording process than Stripe or PayPal. When a DAFpay Gift is completed, DonorDock records the received Gift from the Donor-Advised Fund provider and creates a linked soft credit for the donor who directed the Gift.
